Experience

Karen Harding, Criminal Defence LawyerKaren Harding has over 12 years experience practising as a Criminal Barrister and represents clients on a wide range of criminal and traffic cases ranging from murder to careless driving charges.

In relation to indictable charges Karen has been lead counsel on jury trials for clients charged with rape, sexual violation, indecent assault, offending on children, violence charges, fraud, burglary, receiving, and many more. She has also appeared at the Auckland High Court for clients charged with manufacturing and supplying methamphetamine and has appeared in proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act to prevent assets and homes from being confiscated.

In relation to summary charges Karen appears at the District Court on a daily basis at defended hearings, sentencings, status hearings and family violence court cases. Karen has developed a large traffic/transport practice and has represented hundreds of clients with traffic offences including speeding, drink driving and other driving charges. She is very experienced in representing clients on Limited Licence Applications and has a comprehensive knowledge of the Land Transport Act 1998.

Karen maintains a library at her office in hard copy and has electronic access to relevant law and cases in her area practice. She keeps up-to-date with changes in the law and recent case law.

Karen has recently completed a research paper entitled Psychopathy and Crime Sentencing and Parole Issues in New Zealand. Her knowledge in the area of psychopathy has been relevant in parole board applications that Karen has worked on for clients who were required to have psychopathy assessments as part of their risk assessment. She has also represented offenders suffering from borderline personality disorder and clients who have offended while suffering extreme intoxication and whilst in a 'black out'.

In some cases Karen will instruct expert witnesses such as psychologists and psychiatrists who may give expert evidence on a case. For example, in a sexual violation jury trial case in 2006 where Karen was counsel, expert evidence was called and a not guilty plea was returned by the jury in a case involving a client who had a background of sleepwalking, was extremely intoxicated and issues of automatism and 'intent" were raised in his Defence.

Karen has a network of contacts within organisations that help individuals with addictions and other personal problems. She will assist clients to make contact with the appropriate counsellors and rehabilitation agencies and will always offer her clients active support and encouragement through their rehabilitation progress. Karen is known for her compassion.

Karen has a lot of passion for the work that she does. She enjoys assisting clients and helps to get them the right result. Karen excels in the Courtroom and her written work in submissions and affidavits prepared for Court are of an extremely high standard and very well researched.
